Save on your electricity bill

Hilo works with Hydro-Québec's Rate Flex D, which helps you save money by offering lower electricity prices throughout the winter — except during peak demand events, when prices temporarily rise. That’s when Hilo steps in, automatically managing your connected devices to reduce your household's energy use and help you hold onto those savings.

It’s a solution allowing owners of compatible chargers to automatically participate in Hilo challenges.

Using the Hilo solution for chargers lets you avoid any hassles with having to remember the start and end times for each challenge, as well as forgetting to disconnect or reconnect your vehicle before and after challenges. Your recharging time will therefore be maximized, as well as your potential rewards.

The requirements to participate in the smart charging solution are:

  • a compatible charger; and
  • a wireless network (Wi-Fi) that covers the area of your recharging space (so the charger can connect to the Internet).

Also, as with all Hilo solutions, you must have:

  • a Hilo hub;
  • a smartphone; and
  • an account with Hydro-Québec for Rate D service.

No. The customer must order and install their own charger before joining Hilo’s charging service. Learn more

Yes! Hilo will take care of turning off the power or reducing the power available for recharging from the start of the challenge, and will increase available power to 100% at the end of the challenge. No action is required on your part other than to plug in your vehicle.

Smarter energy use pays off!

By combining Hilo with Rate Flex D, our customers save an average of $155* each winter.

Estimate my savings

* The average potential savings amount is based on the actual consumption of Hilo customers using both a smart heating solution (across all device and housing types) and a smart water heater solution, calculated according to the Rate Flex D pricing in effect at the time. This average is derived from data spanning the last three winter seasons (2022–2025) and is calculated on the basis of 100 hours of participation or 25 peak demand events. Potential savings represent the difference between Rate Flex D and the base rate (Rate D), including applicable taxes. The estimate factors in the use of a smart water heater controller. The savings shown are based on tests conducted with customers who used this solution during the 2024–2025 winter season. Actual savings may vary depending on the level of customer participation and the total number of peak demand event hours during the winter.
