How are my savings with Rate Flex D calculated?

The amount you save with Rate Flex D is calculated as follows:

[cost of electricity used if you had paid the base rate] – [what you paid under Rate Flex D]

It can also be expressed this way:

A = [number of kWh used] × [cost per kWh at the base rate]

B = [number of kWh used] × [cost per kWh under Rate Flex D]

A – B = amount saved on your bill

Keep in mind that during the winter season, electricity costs less under Rate Flex D than at the base rate (making it easy to save!) — except during what are known as “peak demand events,” which are periods of especially high electricity demand.

To maximize your savings and avoid driving up your bill, you should reduce your electricity use as much as possible during these peak demand events, when each kilowatt‑hour is priced higher. Ideally, you should avoid using power-hungry appliances and, most importantly, lower the temperature in your home at the start of each peak event to effectively pause your heating (since heating can account for up to 80% of your electricity bill in winter). This is where Hilo can help — by automatically adjusting your connected devices according to the preferences you set. Learn more about the different participation modes

During a peak demand event, Hilo will automatically lower the temperature settings on your thermostats and can also manage your water heater and EV charging station.
