You must accept the Participant Agreement and commit to 12 months of automation during peak demand events.
The average potential savings amount is based on the actual consumption of Hilo customers who used a smart water heater solution during tests carried out in the 2024–2025 winter season and is calculated on the basis of 100 hours of participation or 25 peak demand events. Potential savings represent the difference between Rate Flex D and the base rate (Rate D), including applicable taxes. Savings with the smart water heater solution may vary depending on the water heater model and household hot water use during peak demand events.

Get Hilo’s water heater controller, or if you choose Sinopé’s Calypso model, order the Hilo hub. After installing the hub, download the Hilo app and add your smart devices so Hilo can automate them during peak demand events.

Please note that a water heater located in a crawl space with a ceiling height lower than six feet, or one that is not accessible at a standing height, may not be eligible. In such cases, the Hilo smart water heater solution will not be installed during the electrician’s visit.
Hilo’s smart water heater solution is provided at no cost, with free first-time installation by a licensed electrician appointed by Hilo. It includes a load controller equipped with a temperature sensor.
This solution automates the management of your water heater during peak demand events. During these events, the power supply is automatically cut off, though you can still use hot water in moderation. If your hot water consumption is too high, the power will be restored.
The Hilo solution includes a three-year warranty and is designed and manufactured in Québec.

The load controller acts like a switch, turning the water heater on and off.
During peak demand events, the water heater is automatically switched off. The large volume of water in the tank will stay hot for several hours, allowing you to use a reasonable amount of hot water during the event. Your comfort will be maintained. Once the peak demand event ends, the water heater will turn back on and resume normal operation.
During a peak event, the temperature sensor, placed at the top of the tank and connected to the controller, ensures the water heater turns back on if the minimum temperature threshold (49°C) is reached.
