How does the charge controller for Hilo’s smart water heater solution work?

The charge controller is used to switch the water heater on and off, like a light switch.

In peak periods (i.e., during Hilo challenges), your water heater will be switched off automatically. 

The substantial amount of water it contains will remain hot for several hours, leaving you with a reasonable amount of hot water you can still use throughout the challenge. This ensures the continued comfort of all our customers. Once the challenge is over, the water heater will restart and resume normal operation.

During a challenge, the temperature sensor connected to the controller ensures that the water heater automatically restarts if the minimum temperature threshold (49°C) is reached. This helps minimize the growth of Legionella bacteria, ensuring the safety of you and your family.
