What can I do to maximize my savings if I have Hilo’s smart water heater solution but not the Hilo thermostats?

Here are a few tips to help you maximize your savings during Hilo peak demand events:

1. Lower the set temperature on your electric heaters

Since your total household electricity use is measured during peak demand events, lowering the temperature on your thermostats by a few degrees can help. Do this manually during the reduction period:

  • 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. for morning events
  • 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for evening events

2. Let Hilo control your water heater

Avoid interacting with the load controller during a peak demand events. If you do, your water heater will be excluded from that challenge, which can reduce your rewards.

Don’t worry — you can still use a reasonable amount of hot water without affecting your participation.

3. Don’t charge your electric vehicle during peak demand events

EV charging consumes a lot of electricity. To stay within the challenge limits, try to plan your charging sessions outside of events hours.

4. Avoid using major appliances

Since your savings are based on your home’s total electricity usage during an event, try to avoid using energy-heavy appliances like your stove, washer, or dishwasher during those hours.
