What can I do to maximize my rewards if I have the Hilo smart water heater solution, but not the Hilo smart thermostats?

Here are a few tips to help you maximize your cash rewards.

1. Lower the setpoint on your electric heaters. During a challenge, the overall consumption of your home is counted. You can lower the temperature on your thermostats by a few degrees yourself during the reduction phase of the challenge, i.e. between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. for a morning challenge, and between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. for an evening challenge.

2. Let Hilo control your water heater! Don’t touch the charge controller during a challenge. If power is restored to your water heater’s controller during a challenge, it’s automatically excluded from that challenge. You can still use a reasonable amount of hot water during a challenge without it affecting your chances of success.

3. If you have a charging station at home, don’t charge your electric car during a challenge. Charging an electric vehicle takes a lot of energy. Instead, plan to recharge your car outside challenge hours.

4. Avoid using major household appliances. The final calculation of your rewards takes into account your home’s overall electricity consumption during a challenge. Surely baking can wait until the challenge is over! Or, postpone doing that laundry load or starting the dishwasher for a few hours.
