Hilo: Who we are

Hilo is the new start-up from Hydro-Québec looking to revolutionize the electric grid. Through millions of IoT devices in people’s homes, we will transform the way energy is used to fine-tune consumption and make the grid more stable and profitable. Hilo fosters a mindset of rapid learning, high tolerance for ambiguity, openness to failure and intrinsic motivation. We value teamwork, performance, passion, authenticity and imagination. Our offices are in downtown Montréal.

What we do

As a critical part of Québec’s electrical infrastructure, we have the mission to build a highly resilient and scalable IoT platform in which we will integrate a wide range of edge devices. We develop microservices, mobile apps and hardware ranging from a centralized cloud-based energy demand management system that transmits commands to edge devices through a hardware gateway in customers’ homes, to systems handling OTA and commands to edge devices via Zigbee and everything in between, from mobile apps to Web management consoles. We are a dynamic team of electrical engineers, embedded software developers, cloud developers, operations specialists, QA, product owners, designers (and more!) using a DevOps and TDD mentality. Sounds like fun? Join us to change the world’s energy landscape!

The project in a nutshell

We’re currently deploying our first pilot, so there is a lot to do to bring the solution to production. We are setting up pipelines, tooling and monitoring, creating a self-healing, scalable architecture, coding REST/JSON/Azure/.Net microservices and more.

Our goal is to integrate multiple edge devices from different hardware vendors with our central stack. Their IoT technology stacks can vary, so in some cases we need to rewrite them and in others write adapters to connect them to our systems.

Our architecture spans cloud, embedded, mobile and Web consumers and publishers.

About the role

Reporting to the CTO

  • Working with the CTO, QA director and the product group, set the strategic vision for your engineering group for the next 6 to 24 months.

  • Help the CTO build the software engineering team from the ground up. While it is being built, you must take a more hands-on approach with coding and tooling.

  • Manage reporting processes, hiring, performance coaching and the support processes within the development and DevOps team.

  • In collaboration with the product group, ensure that scalability, security, maintainability and stability concerns are solidly reflected in the development roadmaps.

  • Act as a key contributor to the infrastructure and architecture technology roadmap as it aligns with the product roadmap, testability of the solution and continuous deployment solutions.

  • Master application, data and infrastructure architecture disciplines.

  • Foster an open and collaborative environment. Lead collaborative teams to achieve common goals.

  • Push for TDD, SCRUM, SOLID principles, DevOps, GitFlow and CI/CD. Be a champion for DevOps principles while understanding that planning remains an important aspect of Agile.

  • Act as the technical escalation point/reference for the software team.

  • Provide day-to-day engaged technical leadership, including driving architecture, design, code reviews and technology selection.

  • Bring an entrepreneurial mindset, openness, transparency and collegiality to your everyday work.

  • Possess a craftsman’s pride in the code the team develops. Prioritize and value quality over quantity without being a perfectionist, i.e., understand that ultimately the code must meet the needs of the business.

  • Have excellent communication skills with peers and stakeholders, be transparent and data-driven, and know how to listen as well as deliver good and bad news.

  • Have a great attitude and be an unflappable team member known for the ability to embrace a challenge while keeping the presence of mind to have fun along the way.

  • Enjoy the challenge of simplifying complex systems and always consider the big picture while acting locally.

What we need

  • University diploma in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering or any relevant discipline—diploma or training in management a plus
  • 8+ years of experience in a leadership role in software development in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent knowledge of C# or Java and/or willingness to learn C#
  • Excellent knowledge of relational and non-relational databases
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one cloud platform
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one DevOps stack (Chef/Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • In-depth knowledge of Atlassian suite, Visual Studio, collaborative tools, Git, Sonar or other quality tools
  • Mastery of the SDLC
  • Hands-on experience with microservices, their database implications and how to cleanly decouple services
  • Excellent knowledge of performance and profiling tools (profilers, Retrace/New Relic/Stackify) and optimization strategies (I/O, memory, processor, etc.)
