The water in my water heater is lukewarm or cold. What should I check?

Start by checking the load indicator light on your Hilo smart controller for electric water heaters to see whether it’s on or off.

If the light is off, follow these steps:

  1. If none of the lights on the controller are on, check your home’s electrical panel to make sure the circuit breaker is in the "on" position. If it is and no lights are showing, please contact Hilo technical support.
  2. If at least one other indicator light is on, press the button on the controller to turn the water heater’s power back on. The load indicator light should turn red. If it doesn’t, contact Hilo technical support.

Once power is restored, allow time for the water heater to reheat the water in the tank. The reheating time will vary depending on the size of your water heater — the larger the tank, the longer it will take to warm up the water inside.

If the load indicator light is on, but your water still doesn’t heat up after a reasonable amount of time, the issue may be related to the water heater itself. In that case, we recommend contacting a qualified plumber.
