What can I do to maximize my rewards if I have Hilo’s smart water heater solution but not the Hilo thermostats?

Here are a few tips to help you maximize your rewards during Hilo challenges:

1. Lower the set temperature on your electric heaters

Since your total household electricity use is measured during challenges, lowering the temperature on your thermostats by a few degrees can help. Do this manually during the reduction period:

  • 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. for morning challenges
  • 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for evening challenges

2. Let Hilo control your water heater

Avoid interacting with (alt : adjusting) the load controller during a challenge. If you do, your water heater will be excluded from that challenge, which can reduce your rewards.

Don’t worry — you can still use a reasonable amount of hot water without affecting your participation.

3. Don’t charge your electric vehicle during challenges

EV charging consumes (alt : uses) a lot of electricity. To stay within the challenge limits, try to plan your charging sessions outside of challenge hours.

4. Avoid using major appliances

Since your rewards are based on your home’s total electricity usage during a challenge, try to avoid using energy-heavy appliances like your stove, washer, or dishwasher during those hours.
